Day 29 – invent a game for a child January 30, 2013

Children games need to be simple and fun – I believe those are the two core ingredients for creating a game that will facilitate much laughter and happiness.

Now, when you are talking about an 8 month child, those two characteristics still apply. However the game can even be simpler and will evoke just as much fun.

I have recently learnt the core of a 8 month old child’s fun element – it should be papery and make rustling noises when passed from hand to hand. Wrapping paper was discovered at Christmas to much success and today’s game would be a slight variation of this.

I was opening the mail today when I eyed my daughters fixation with the discarded envelopes. Once I had finished with them, I placed the envelopes in her lap and that is when the fun began!

She started lifting and pulling and twisting the envelopes while exchanging them from hand to hand. She would drop one over her shoulder and then search for it like it was a precious artefact that should not be lost.

This game which commenced at about 8pm lasted a good 30 minutes! Who needs expensive toys and possessions when there is mail delivered everyday in exciting white papery envelopes. I am guessing I may need to be slightly more inventive in developing games for her as she gets older as I envisage that an envelope may not be as exciting at the age of 5 :)
