FiRaChaMo

Fifty Random Challenges Month

Day 31: Walk somewhere you would normally drive

Posted by wheatbites on January 31, 2009

Well… the final challenge for FiRaChaMo in 2009 is complete.

I was going to wake up early this morning to walk about an hour to a shopping centre which is about a 20 minute drive away. However seeing how the greatest ever mens tennis match was played last night: Nadal vs Verdasco, during the semi finals at the Australian Open – the match went for an epic 5 hours, i was not able to go. After falling asleep after 1am, there was no chance for a long early morning walk. I woke up at about 10am, and it was extremely hot. By the time i had breakfast, showered and got ready for the day – it was midday. My boyfriend wanted to participate in the final challenge for the month, so we decided to walk down to a closer shopping centre, for some reason we happen to ALWAYS drive there. We have probably been there about 10 times since we have lived in the area, however each time we have gone there – we have driven.

It is only a 5 minute drive away, so it took us about 20 minutes to walk. It was hot! We got to the shops and walked around a little bit, my boyfriend got a haircut, we bought some lunch and then came back home. This walk really made us realise how close the shopping centre is to us, and if we do want to go there, we should definitely just put on our sneakers and go for a bit of a stroll.

Walking today also made me realise how much i love walking! Mid last year our work team had a pedometer challenge (which if you don’t mind me saying – i won! YAY!)… the reason i won, was because i just started walking to ridiculously far away places. I would walk a good 90 minutes to the city, or alternatively head out west and walk to work in about 100 minutes. I would have my ipod on, and just walk in the heat, in the breeze taking in the world around me. You really see so much more when you walk rather than traveling within a car. So with FiRaChaMo being over, one of my new challenges is to start going on walks again – i almost prefer to go on walks alone as i can just listen to my music and be non existent in a world buzzing around me.

This in not the end of FiRaChaMo… it is really only the beginning to a life full of randomness.

Over the next couple of days, i will be reflecting on the month that was and perhaps ponder what is next.
